FOOD IN THE CLASSROOM
Written by William Brown
For me as a primary teacher there are often events; birthdays, end of year parties, 100 days celebrations etc. that involve food being brought into the classroom and shared. Although of course I would prefer all food to be vegan I don't consider insisting on this to be viable option as no doubt the response this would cause from parents and children would be strongly against and therefore I'm sure management would not allow me to impose such restrictions. So what I do is to allow children to bring in whatever food they like (encouraging healthy and therefore vegan options) and myself bring in something vegan. If I get the opportunity and I feel it will be worthwhile I use the food I bring in as the starting point of an explanation/discussion of why I am vegan. I don't pass comment on the food that children bring in, beyond expressing praise for healthy options. I would be interested to hear how other vegan teachers deal with this issue.
